► Sankeien is one of the lesser known Japanese gardens near Tokyo – and I write “near” because its not really in Tokyo, not even Yokohama, but outside Yokohama – in the outskirts of a small town called “Negishi”.

It’s not the easiest thing there (train-train-bus-walking from central Tokyo) but once you’re there, you’ll realize it was well worth the effort. The garden is huge, and features a quite big lake (not just a small pond here!) – A three story pagoda, several old traditional edo style houses, plenty of variation in the landscape – bonsai, bamboo, plenty of small streams, ponds & lotus flowers. Everything you’d expect from a Japanese garden – and more!

It’s a really beautiful place. I’ve said it a million times before in my descriptions, and I’ll say it again : If you get the chance, do yourself the favor and visit this place. – Enjoy!
