JIZAN, SAUDI ARABIA – Welcome to the remote Jizan Region of Saudi Arabia, located on the Red Sea, and along the border of Yemen. Today weโre taking a ferry to the Farasan Islands, beautiful Red Sea islands where the people are extremely friendly and the culture is so pure and authentic. Weโll be touring around the island, trying some of the local food, and then the highlight will be a full Farasan Islands seafood meal on the beach – everything home cooked. Itโs going to be an incredible day of Red Sea Arabian food, and I canโt wait to share it all with you now!
Jazan City – 40 kilometers off the coast of Jazan, Saudi Arabia, within the Red Sea are the Farasan Islands. There are around 80 different islands, home to a just a small population of around 12,000 permanent residents – many of whom still maintain their local traditions. To get there, you take a short 1 hour ferry ride, and when you arrive you can actually feel this sense of relaxation and friendliness when you arrive.
Local breakfast – we first headed to a local spot to have a quick breakfast of deep fried batter, some a little sweet and some with a little curry powder taste. It was a perfect way to get started. Afterwards to we continued on to the market. Unfortunately the fish auction only takes place in the afternoon, so we werenโt able to see it, but we did meet some very friendly locals and try some of the local Farasan islands melons.
Huge seafood meal – Finally to complete this amazing day in the Farasan Islands, we were invited to a local seafood cookout on the beach to make some of the traditional foods of Farasan Islands; Marsah – mashed banana bread pudding; Sayadiyeh – fish with rice; Megash – sesame oil fish; Helba – fenugreek sauce are just a few of the wonderful dishes. I loved the meal and the atmosphere and our incredible new friends. The food was all fantastic, but I think the highlight was the megash – fish boiled in sesame oil, something truly delicious and something you have to eat when youโre in the Farasan Islands.

horrible guy! Stuffing his face as so many people around the world go hungry!
Hey Mark. Wherever you go, you bring a ray of sunshine with you. They are so generous and polite to you. Hospitality on one. Meaning great. Enjoy.. โค๏ธ๐
Always hated traveling a long way to get authentic food from local cooks and then have them give you plastic utensils to eat with and a plastic bottle filled with water or some sugary drink.
If I couldn't use my hands to eat with I'd use cutlery from my old mess kit or later started using a fancier cutlery set I got at a pro shop.
Carried a lot of fresh water around on my back that was stored in canteens too.
Everybody said I was crazy for carrying around that much weight, but at least I didn't have to taste of plastic infused water, it upped my daily physical fitness and made me stout as a bull.
Same with mountain climbing, always carried an extremely heavy pack, and everybody made fun of it, until they needed something they didn't bring, then they would offer to help me carry it every now and then, but I'd always refuse because I brought all of that stuff with me everywhere to save money when traveling, to be prepared for almost any emergency, for food and drink and to help boost my physical stamina.
Years ago was running around all of the beaches around the world, woke up one morning on the beach and took off running as usual and stopped when I seen a bunch of folks in the water pulling on a net.
So I dropped my pack, emptied my pockets, kicked off my shoes and got in there with it.
It was a massive amount of fish in that net, but there was a bunch of folks that needed feeding too.
Didn't speak the language, but it was across the Red Sea from the sauds and a little further south.
Dried off for a bit in the sun, then geared back up and took off again.
Then some men came running up behind me, thought they were about to ambush the young female foreigner traveling alone, so I turned around real quick ready to fight, but they stopped and held up their hands as if they were saying, don't worry we mean no harm, and they said something, then started motioning for me to come back with them.
Went with them, but was on edge and ready for trouble, just in case.
It was all good though because they thought since I helped pull in that massive catch that I deserved to reap the rewards and had me a fine meal with some nice folks.
They actually had one woman there that spoke a bit of broken English and she sat with me.
One man came near and started talking to those around me, and you can tell when somebody's talking about you, even if you don't fully understand what they're saying.
So I asked the woman what he was saying about me and she said, "he says you strong, very very strong."
Evidently my small frame that stood 5'5" tall and weighed a solid 135 pounds made quite an impression on these folks.
Got that fine midday meal, had a bit of conversation with what seemed like the elders of the group via the broken English speaking woman, got invited to a fine supper, got invited to stay the night in what must have been plush accommodations for that part of the world, got up to leave but was lured back again to have a fine breakfast, then they loaded up my mess kit with some extra food and give me some local fruits for my journey.
It was funny, when I took off my pack to load it with the food they give me, then one man was shocked when he was gonna kindly help me pick it up and discovered the weight of it.
The really funny part was that they must've passed my pack around to twenty or thirty people to see how heavy it was.
Love it when good deeds get rewarded with some fine vittles and new friends.
You are the happiest person. I want to be like you.
Media adds barriers…Mark breaks them
Mark is swamping spit left and right…
Wow๐ฒ great food๐คค
I think it's kind of ironic that the cooking was done so clean with wearing gloves, but then when the eating starts everyne just sticks their hands in their mouths and then back in the food ๐
To be honest this was not the best of episodes when they say barbeque on the beach this is not what you expect
Just to show you dont beleive the media making it look like every country is out to get you. Yes the head of state might have an agenda but the people of the land are all generally the same and want peace and happiness, here in canada, my city has a university and we have several if not thousands of imigrants from india, iran, lebanon and all are friendly they come here for peace to escape the wars. Humans are Humans we all want the same thing good food peace and prosper , Greed from the ones running the countries destroys countries all to make a profit
Been watching Mark since 2013 and heโs respect to each places culture and tradition is truly an amazing inspiration.
Thanks Mark and hope to see more from your vlogs!

All the food looks so good
I love how Mark Wiens calls himself : FULL TIME EATER !! ๐๐๐๐๐ !!
Perfectly cooking food is always just a matter of simply Time and Temperature meeting at the right point.
โ๏ธโ๏ธ I be home trying to make some of the food I see mark eat I'm a top chef now LOVE the videos
My favourite video of your trip to that country Saudi Arabia – thank you.
I liked that tje fish dishes had meaty fish and the first one you tried looked nice – not all bones and flakey.
All of those dishes looked very edible and I liked the rice dish and tamarind curry dish one.
The women cook was very conscientious in her cooking – the banana thing desert also looked great.
I was surprised – I thought the food might be more unfamiliar or different but it all looked very edible and simple and better than your video in the city when you had kebab I think.
Thank you.
I have watched him for a few years now
