We spent the night inside Ekoin temple on Mount Koya and it turned into one of the highlights of our Japan trip. Staying in one of the temples atop the mountain will see you having vegetarian food prepared by the monks, meditating with the monks and partaking in the Goma fire ritual that’s guaranteed to blow you away.

At most of the temples, they’ll have an English-speaking monk who will guide you through the ceremonies and also offer to take you on an unforgettable night walk inside Okunoin, where you’ll get to learn about its history, as well as the legendary spot where Kobo Daishi entered into eternal meditation.
