I'll be sure to check out the JR fare calculator, as with my early estimations, even though I'll be taking 2 shinkansen at the very least (Kyoto -> Kanagawa (Kamakura), Kanagawa -> Tokyo) I'm still unsure if I get the full value of the purchase. Also, while some local JR lines are convenient, many others aren't and a 10-20 minute trip on a non-JR line can balloon to double or more if you try traveling on only JR lines.

One addition. Don't buy the JR pass more then 3 months in advance. The exchange voucher is only valid for 3 months.

Very helpful as I'm on my way to Tokyo
Next month I will spend 2 months and a few days in Japan. I plan to spend the first month around Tokyo before spending long periods in other cities. Obviously I don't need a pass for this portion of the trip. Finally on the last 21 days of the trip I wanted to use the JR Pass expensively to visit more minor sights and cities until I catch my flight back home. Looks like you can't pre-book the JR pass due to the 30 day rule (if bought from the offical site). π
Hi Lisa thank you for the informative videos. My family and I will be going to Japan at the end of this month. I went online and on the Japan website I only got 2 QR Codes. I thought it was 3? Is it still 3 or changed to 2 QR codes needed to enter Japan? Thanks in advance. Thanks
I am going to spend 3 weeks in Hokkaido next month and this video is very helpful. Thank you! I have a question though, can I reserved seats online before I arrive into Japan and exchange the voucher for the actual JR Pass?
