Behind the scenes:
The Tsugaru Railway is a small railroad company that operates a single line from the small town of Goshogawara to the rural north of the Tsugaru region, the western peninsula at the northern tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu. The line is 21 kilometers long, has 12 stations, and terminates at Tsugaru-Nakasato. The train travels through a picturesque landscape that changes with the seasons. Nationally known is the Stove Ressha, the “Stove Train”, which runs during the cold winter months when the Tsugaru Plain is covered in a picturesque blanket of snow, attracting many tourists and railroad enthusiasts. These are old train cars from the 1950s, designed for the cold regions and equipped with traditional coal-fired heating stoves. The car sells local sake, hot tea, and especially dried squid, which is grilled over the stove by a train employee and then served as a snack. An attraction on this trip is the station near the spacious Ashino Park. The old station building, which was in use until 1975, is still standing and now serves as a nice café for a short break. The platform becomes a hotspot in spring when the cars of the Tsugaru Railway pass through a cherry blossom tunnel. We made another stop in Kanagi, the birthplace of the legendary Japanese writer Osamu Dazai. The stunning villa where he spent his childhood is still standing and serves as the Osamu Dazai Memorial Museum.
