Join us on a journey to discover some of the well-known and charming spots in Hakodate, a port city located in southern Hokkaido, Japan. From traditional tea houses to historic neighborhoods, from scenic viewpoints to bustling markets, this city has something for everyone.

First, we visit a local Japanese Kominka, a traditional house that has been renovated and converted into a tea house. Here, we sample some of the finest Japanese teas and sweets while admiring the beauty of the old architecture and the peaceful surroundings.

Next, we head to the Hakodate Motomachi area, a district that used to be the residential area for foreign merchants and diplomats in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We walk along the charming streets lined with western-style buildings, visit the Russian Orthodox Church, and learn about the city’s cosmopolitan past.

Then, we check out Hachiman-zaka slope, a steep street that leads to the top of Mt. Hakodate. Along the way, we enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the bay, and explore the hidden alleys and gardens that dot the hillside.

At the top of Mt. Hakodate, we are rewarded with one of the best night views in Japan, a breathtaking vista of the city lights and the starry sky. We take our time to savor the moment and capture some stunning shots of the scenery.

Next, we continue our adventure by visiting the Goryokaku, a star-shaped fort that was built in the 19th century and played a significant role in the history of Japan. We learn about its design, its battles, and its legacy, and take a stroll in the surrounding park, which is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season.

After that, we head to Daimon Yokocho, a narrow alley lined with small bars and eateries. Here, we try some of the local delicacies, such as squid sashimi, grilled scallops, and Hokkaido beer, while chatting with the friendly owners and patrons.

Finally in the morning, we visit the Hakodate Morning Market, a bustling market that opens early in the morning and offers a wide range of fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits, and souvenirs. We join the crowds and sample some of the specialties, such as sea urchin, king crab, and scallop rice bowls.
