Planning a trip to Kyoto and wondering which temples to visit? Let’s get you started! There are over 1600 temples and 400 shrines, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
= Kiyomizu-dera temple – Famous for its large viewing platform on the side of the mountain. You can drink from the Otowa spring, each stream has different benefits: health, longevity, or success.
= Fushimi Inari shrine – My favorite of all time, distinct for its thousands of tori gates. Fushimi Inari is the head of all Inari shrines in Japan. Foxes are prominent throughout the grounds, as they are considered to be Inari’s messengers (they often have something in their mouths). It takes about 2 hours to climb to the top and back, free to enter, and open 24 hours.
Kennin-ji Temple – The head temple of Rinzai Buddhism, and one of the 5 most important Zen temples of Kyoto. One of the striking aspects of this temple is the twin dragon ceiling (a new addition since 2002)
