Hamamatsu City is located in western Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s the prefecture’s largest city. Hamamatsu Castle is located near the city center. Originally built in the 16th century, it has been reconstructed multiple times over the centuries. The current structure, rebuilt in 1958, serves as a museum with exhibits on the castle’s history and the Edo period.
Hamamatsu Castle is also known by the nickname “Shusse Castle.” The name “Shusse” means “success” or “promotion” in Japanese, and it is said that the castle was given this nickname because many of its lords went on to achieve success and rise to higher positions in government.
