I had the pleasure of visiting Hirosaki Castle during its winter Candle Festival. Starting from my hand-made snow figure with the castle in the background, I took a delightful walk around the castle grounds. The surroundings were breathtaking, with snow towers and backlit classical Japanese neputa-e adding to the winter wonderland ambiance.
As I walked, I passed through an area illuminated with candles stands, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Down by the moat, I discovered small snow huts with even more candles, creating a calming and serene environment.
Continuing my stroll, I came across other snow figures and neputa-e stands, each with its own unique charm. Finally, I reached the area with food stalls and a full-size snow building in a colorful light up. After getting Ayataka tea, I headed back to the entrance, satisfied and content with the magical experience.

  2. Finally!!!
I found the time watching one of your lovely videos again, with a little chance i might to see one of these places myself this year!

  3. It's nice how such simple things can still make people happy. No mobile phones, no computer games, just snow, candles, light and art.

  4. The snow looks fantastic. Do you use the front dial on your RS3 gimbal to zoom with the lens?

  5. Whether it is during the snow season or during hanami, Hirosaki is pure magic, and I’m fortunate to have been there three times.

  6. This looks so cool! Literally 😄 man, you Japanese have so many awesome looking festivities and stuff, I am amazed once again!

  7. I can't believe how a country can be this good. No country is perfect, but Japan sure does come close. That's why Japanese people are welcome everywhere in the world. No.1 Passport freedom for a reason.

  8. For about 4 years and to this day, I have been personally struggling with anxiety and depression issues. I always dreamed about going to Japan and living there. Alongside my treatment and professional help, your videos help me a lot with these issues and I get to know more about these beautiful places in Japan. Thank you for your efforts and your content, Ram! I appreciate you. Greetings from Spain, Europe. 😊

  9. I am super interested in doing something similar when I visit Japan, but I am nervous that people might not be happy about getting filmed by some random foreigners.

  10. "This year I had great trouble making up my mind where to go for autumn moon viewing. Finally, after much perplexed head-scratching, I decided on the Ishiyama Temple. The day before the full moon, however, I read in the paper that there would be loudspeakers in the woods at Ishiyama to regale the moon-viewing guests with phonograph records of the Moonlight Sonata. I canceled my plans immediately…I remember another ruined moon-viewing, the year we took a boat on the night of the harvest full moon and sailed out over the lake of the Suma Temple. We put together a party, we had our refreshments in lacquered boxes, we set bravely out. But the margin of the lake was decorated brilliantly with electric lights in five colors. There was indeed a moon if one strained one’s eyes for it."–from 'In Praise of Shadows' by Tanizaki Jun’ichiro

The Candle Festival as recorded here might have been a truly wonderful sight had they forgone the use of all but the candles and decorative lighting. The street lamps and spotlights (unnecessary and wasteful in the light of day with which the video begins) ruin the ambience, dispel the magic.

We have an event similar to this held around Christmas in the area where I live. The county arboretum is lit for several nights by only the light of votive candles (and the moon and stars if there is no cloud cover). Walking the circuit of trails through the park is an awe-inspiring experience.

  11. 2:37 ここでナチスのシンボルを見つけて驚いたかもしれません。 しかし、心配しないでください! これは生命の古代仏教のシンボルです。Here you may have spotted a Nazi symbol, and been alarmed. But please do not worry! This is an ancient Buddhist symbol of life.
