Here we have yet another sample of the brutal forces of Icelandic nature but in this case it’s a kind of mystery since this event has not been studied all that much. It has been suggested that the landslide occurred 7000 years ago and led to a 40m high tidal wave that traveled across the fjord and the landslide might have been triggered by an earthquake as it’s close to the Tjornes Fracture Zone. It’s also a fault line under the mountain that is called Ystuvíkurfjall, located deep in Eyjafjörður, Icelands deepest fjord.

  1. Wow, this must have been e massive landslide indeed. A beautiful video again, you have a wonderful country.

  2. Is there a catalogue of historic landslides? There must be quite extensive terrain with characteristics similar to those of this location before the slide happened, and those are disasters waiting for the right circumstances (another earthquake, or sustained rain, or both, or something else)… Even if most of Iceland is "empty", resulting flood waves could cause a lot of grief a great distance away in populated areas. Slides of this magnitude being quite rare is somewhat reassuring, but no comfort to those who find themselves on the wrong side of the odds if it happens.

  3. I think you're fast becoming a master at editing Gylfi, and your choice of music always so in tune with what i'm watching. SUCH a beautiful place, and this one brought tears to my old eyes. Those Icelandic horses….uhh; beautiful. Thank you. Looking forward to your next.

  4. Abdolutely amazing – the country and the video. Thank you so much for sharing Iceland's beauty!

  5. Cinmatic Gylfi! Again, such beautiful imagery. The production team that made "Katla" on Netflix, they need you to do these cinematic shots (and I'll hope for a season 2, which almost certainly will not happen). I can recommend "Katla" for those who have not heard of it or seen it. 8 episodes on Netflix. Loved it.

  6. Were some similarly huge landslides during the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake in NZ. Created a new lake on a dammed river etc. Cows went for a ride. GNS has made some short info vids about them.

  7. Only when you pan wide from the ocean does the scale of the thing become real. Stunning and beautifully filmed. Thank you.

  8. The wave of water that this thing had to made when it happens must have been devastating for that fjord!

  9. Just Icelandic Indeed & this landscape is Just Majestic!
I ❤️ & want those Icelandic ponies. Reminds me of our next-door neighbor’s Shetland ponies.MUST be related.

  10. Nicely done, sir. This should be in geology text books. Beautiful view and example.

  11. I have an answer! Can you fly over our Vulcano, we called him RagNar. Want to see in the cone very hard. Maybe, when you have some time, can you show us the crater ?

  12. Hi Gylfi, I hope you're good – I see we had an X-flare and 2 large CME's hitting tomorrow, I guess you will get some very dramatic Northern Lights (assuming you have clear weather). Regards Tony

  13. …7000 years ago they think this slide happened, and I can still see the outline of the scarp clearly enough to recognize it! This is both fascinating and scary, how deadly such a beautiful landscape can be.
Your videos and editing really do justice to the wonders of Iceland!

  14. Your videos are gorgeous! When I hear you talk about going to 8K is makes me cringe to think of the unnecessary expense of all of the needed equipment and the time to render. I have a 1080p display and won't spend on anything more. Most people can't see the difference with higher resolutions, particularly if a fast refresh is involved, something above 60Hz. You should stick to what you have and what you know. 8K is a trap and of no benefit to anyone, yourself least of all. Cheers!
