Maybe you wonder how to choose correct passes or ticket especially what is the most variable ticket for you. Today I will advise for you. First please check the plan of your Japan travel. Case 1. For example, you land at Tokyo, and go to Osaka and after Fukuoka, and next go to Hokkaido. Kind of this with long distance travel, you should get the JR Pass. Because JR Pass is good for the long distance travel. Case 2. You enjoy only one city, especially in Tokyo. For example you want to visit the Akihabara for anime store, and after you go to the TokyoTower, and enjoying the Asakusa Sensoji… In this case, you should get IC pass. IC pass is not a free pass, but if you use the IC pass, very useful when you ride the subway. In this case I think you don’t need to get the JR Pass. Case 3. You arrived at Haneda Airport, after you go to Osaka and enjoying Osaka and the Kyoto and Nara. In this case you should get JR Pass and some kind of IC pass like SUICA or ICOCA. Because in Osaka or Kyoto or Nara, a major sightseeing place is near to the JR line. Maybe you often use the JR line. You should get the JR Pass. Adding this, the price of JR Pass is very reasonable compare to the real price of Shinkansen. If you use a Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka almost the same as the JR Pass. Of course it depends on the length of the term. But if you go to Osaka or Kyoto, that’s the kind of Kansai area, you should get the JR Pass. And for your convenience, gets some kind of IC pass. f your plan is only near Tokyo, you also have option “JR Tokyo Wide Pass”. It can use in the Tokyo and around areas. For example, Kawaguchiko (it’s near from Mt.Fuji), Nikko, Kusatsu, Karuizawa, and Izu. If you use JR Tokyo wide pass, you can freely use the trains. and price is more reasonable than JR Pass. If your plan is in Kansai area, you also choose “Kansai Thru Pass”. It’s looks like JR Tokyo wide pass, very similer. If your plan is only in Kansai area, like Osaka, Kyoto or so, you can choose that pass. Let’s check your plan and choose a good passes for you.

Very helpful, as always! You clearly understand the concerns of a first-time Japan visit. I have gotten my whole trip mapped out on the English NAVITIME app. It's very good. Their website is also nice in English but if you try to share your created trip, it appears to link to the Japanese app only – just information for anyone else that might be curious. I haven't been able to use the English site and English app in conjunction.
Forgive me for asking more questions, but this is something I have been trying to clarify. So if I buy a Suica card to get around locally in Tokyo, can I also use it to get around locally in Kyoto? Sometimes it seems the IC cards are regional sometimes it sounds like they work everywhere.
Amazing video – very informative. Thank you so much for your content. Subscribed.
Your vital information is very much appreciated. However, my question is from haneda airport how to use buses to get to Osaka?.. planning to go October.. thank's soooooooo much for your time much appreciated.
Thank you for your helpful video! One question – at the ticket or SUICA vending machines, can I use a credit card? Or only cash?
Hello there, thank you for the useful informations again!
Well done 😀
When I visited Japan I remember having to board the bus using the centre doors and exiting at the front. Maybe this was in Kyoto.
Very informative. Thank you.
So I can get the suica card and ride the train in all of Japan?? (In Kyoto, in Nagano..etc?)
Hi Jake! Great video!
If you're boarding a bus that accepts a JR Pass, do you tap the JR pass the same way as an IC card?
Thank You! Perfect information for our trip this year. Many thanks
Is it possible to book via web train ticket ( with seat selection ) without JR Pass?
Wonderful instructions and very helpful! Thank you.
Jake-san, thank you for your helpful video! I use a spreadsheet and ticket prices information from google maps and hyperdia to calculate how much I would spend on JR tickets to justify my purchase of JR Pass. For my next visit, I already calculated that I would save roughly JPY67.5k (or $500) per person if I use a 7 days JR Pass! The downside is, I have to move around as many cities as possible during those 7 days period lol. My itinerary will be Fukuoka – Nagasaki – Hiroshima – Okayama – Nagoya – Tokyo. The biggest saving is going to be the usage of JR Pass on Nobi Nobi seat on Sunrise Seto/Izumi leaving from Okayama to Tokyo, I hope I can secure the reservation through online booking 1 month before.
Thanks for all this! I'm not as confused as i was before but i still don't know what to buy. I plan to fly to Osaka for a week the take a Shinkensen to Tokyo for a week and leave from Narita. I suppose my question is can I use the Icocoa from Osaka JR West in Tokyo JR East? As i understand it I can but then the site says "the origin and destination stations have to be located inside the IC card's coverage area." I aslo plan to get the 7 day JR Rail pass, and as i understand it works on JR lines only. Perhaps I'm still confused on how this works… I was over in 2010 and bought the 1000 yen day pass but it stopped working one time and i had to scramble to get 2 tickets with limited cash, had to break some rules to do so. I dont NEED the JR Rail pass, as i only plan on using it on the Shinkensen as it was SUPER expensive in 2010 (Tokyo to Nagoya and back) TLDR can i use the Icocoa in Tokyo.
14:24 I want to ask about this step, why in the video u are not tap out of the ic card from the bus?
Hi Jake, thank you for the useful info. I LOVE Japan, above all I adoreTokyo. I've been in your Country 6 times during the years and I can't wait to be back again!! Last time I was in Tokyo (2018) I stayed there 15 days and I've found very convenient buying the "Tokyo subway 72 hours ticket" issued by Tokyo Meteo, it costed 1.500 yen, very very convenient and the subway for me is the best way to visit the city because it gets everywhere. I suggest these kind of tickets if you remain in Tokyo more than 2 or 3 days (info on the Tokyo Metro website).
