Almost 5 years after WestJet’s new livery was unveiled, the very first Saab 340 has finally been painted!

This 29-year old turboprop, operated by Pacific Coastal on behalf of WestJet, had been in the States for some heavy maintenance since September, and flew back to Canada last week. It ferried from Vancouver to Calgary on Tuesday, and then went for a training flight the same day.

Now, the new WestJet livery has been around for a while on the 737 MAXs, 787s, and WestJet Cargos, but this Saab is actually the very first plane to be painted that wasn’t a new addition to the fleet. In fairness to WestJet, the rebranding came at kind of an unlucky time for them in mid-2018.

The 737 MAX grounding a few months later meant they needed every plane they had available (so no time for painting), and then the financial situation from 2020 onwards.

That being said, they have yet to repaint a single 737NG or Dash 8, but now that the first repaint has finally taken place, here’s hoping the rest of the fleet will follow shortly! Enjoy this fantastic-looking Saab!

  1. Very distinctive SAAB sound. This is an old Eagle bird. Glad to see it still flying and in good condition.

  2. Alex… you have a wonderful channel… I'm a satisfied subscriber. I may be incorrect here; but is it not true that the SAAB 340's are subject to icing, due to something related to the expanding bladder not actually removing enough ice? I thought they were all moved to operations in the South????

  3. Now we just need to add 10+ more SAABs to meet the demand, after Air Canada pulled so many regional flights in the west.

  4. Oh my god they actually did it
I've joked about this for months, assuming the Q's would be repainted first.
I'll miss the Black and white scheme.

  5. Of all the aircraft of this era and type this is one I wish there were more of .a great all rounder not exceptional at any one thing but versatile as heck.

  6. I know this is never how it works in most cases but I think it would be awesome WestJet kept some planes in the older livery. Something about the classic WestJet tail is beautiful to me.

  7. Is Too Bad Westjet Bombadier Dash-8 Q400's Turboprops don't have The New Westjet Airlines Liveries as yet but I hope they'll get soon.

  8. Kudos to the design team that created the newer Westjet livery. A lot of design houses commissioned to create a new livery often design it around an airline's flagship aircraft type & then modify it for other aircraft types in the fleet. They sometimes overlook graphic impact too. For example, what may look excellent on a short fuselage may make a long fuselage appear even more lengthy & throw the colour scheme out of balance. In this instance, the Westjet livery looks superb on all of the airline's aircraft types. It is very attractive, interesting, with crisp colours & very cleverly incorporates the airline's logo & maple leaf together to promote corporate identity. Nothing gimmicky here. Instead, an outstanding design that's pleasing to the eye.

  9. lovely little turboprob, the livery looks great! consider yourself lucky to have them i great numbers, turboprobs sadly became rare birds over here in germany

  11. Great video Alex. Love the livery on the Saab 340. Looking forward to some flight adventures in Western Canada this May. Hello from Reading, Pennsylvania in the U.S.😊

  12. Hey Alex, I’m hearing rumours that Westjet is possibly opening a route between Calgary and Thunder Bay. Do you think this is possible? I love your videos by the way.

  13. She's a beauty! The Saab 340B always brings back wonderful memories of our friend's Gulfstream G-159 turboprop that I got to fly on when I was a just a small boy. Thanks for sharing Alex!
