▶ Yamanaka-juku (translated from Wikipedia)
Yamanaka-juku is a post station on the Kishu Kaido.
The Yamanaka-juku area was a strategic point of transportation between Izumi-no-kuni and Ki-no-kuni, and there is a description in the October 13, Enryaku 23 (804) article of “Nihon Koki” that Emperor Kanmu passed through the area on his way back to Ki-no-kuni. The records of the passage can also be found in the “Taikiki” article of March 19, 1148 and May 5, 1149. It is said that during the Heiji Disturbance, Taira no Kiyomori met a messenger from Kyoto at “Oh-no-Nakayama” (Heiji Monogatari), and it is believed that “Oh-no-Nakayama” refers to the Onoyama Pass.
In the mid-Heian period, when the Kumano Kaido (Kumano Highway) was developed in conjunction with the rise of Kumano pilgrimages, 99 Oji shrines were established in Yamanaka Village, and in the October 8, 1201 article of the Go-Toba-in Pilgrimage Record (in the Meigetsu-ki), “Jisan-Uhame-oji, Jizo-doji” and in the April 24, 1210 article of the Minkei-ki, “Jougen 4 (1210),” “Uma-me-ji” are found. In the April 24, 1210 article of the Minjyo-ki, there is a reference to “Umame Oji”.
In the Nanbokucho Period, a barrier called Yamanakaseki was established, and the barrier coins were used to pay for the construction of the Hokke-do Hall at Kawachi Kanshinji Temple (Kawachi Nagano City), but in 1370, the right to collect the coins was reduced by half (“Kanshinji Document”).
According to the “Wakita family document,” an ancient document dating from the 18th century, a request for a reduction or exemption of the burden of sukego associated with an inn station was made in 1784. According to the “Wakita Family Documents,” an ancient document dating from the 18th century, a document titled “Senshu Nobutatsu Shuku Osukego Gomen Gomen Gan” is dated 1784 (Temmei 4), in which a request is made to reduce or exempt the burden of sukego associated with the shukueki.
According to this document, Yamanaka-juku Sukego was originally imposed on 22 villages in Tottori-so and Shimo-so, but since Shimo-so left Sukego in the Kan’ei era, 11 villages in Tottori-so had to bear the responsibility. Throughout the Edo period, the burden of sukego seemed to have been heavy, and petitions were repeatedly submitted to reduce the burden or to increase the number of villages that were responsible for sukego, but it was not until 1872 (Meiji 5) that the burden was finally released.
▶ Hennan (from Wikipedia)
Hannan (阪南市, Hannan-shi) is a city located in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. As of 30 November 2021, the city had an estimated population of 52,350 in 24093 households and a population density of 1400 persons per km². The total area of the city is 36.17 square kilometres (13.97 sq mi).
After the Meiji restoration, the villages of Ozaki, Nishitottori, Higashitottori, and Shimoshō were established within Hine District with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1896 the area became part of Sennan District, Osaka. Ozaki was elevated to town status on June 1, 1939. On September 30, 1956 Ozaki merged with Nishitottori-mura, and Shimoshō to form the town of Hankai (南海町). On November 1, 1960 the village of Higashitottori was elevated to town status. On October 20, 1972 the towns of Nankai and Higashitottori merged to form town of Hannan. The town’s name was derived from the onyomi reading of the kanji 阪 (han), standing for Osaka prefecture (大阪府), and the kanji 南 (nan), meaning south. Thus it means “Southern Osaka”. On October 1, 1991, Hannan attainted city status as the newest city in Osaka Prefecture.
