Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Hokkaido and Japan. The North of Hokkaido has struggled economically but it has a certain charm about it. This trip took place in winter in the days after New year’s. Probably not the best time to visit as many people are on holiday which makes the city seem even more abandoned.
I recommend visiting Wakkanai and the north of Hokkaido in summer. Winter is ok to visit but be prepared for snowstorms and cold. Have fun though whichever season you go.

Great video! Crazy how many abandoned structures are in Hoikkaido.

This is also the case in north eastern norway bordering russia. Pretty cool since norway is so far away from japan.
I camped out Wakkanai, awesome spot there. Wrote about it in my blog here if anyone's interested https://wander.media/campsite-5-wakkanai-forest-hill-camping-in-the-north
Thank you for the video, north of hokkaido is like the land of loneliness, sadly, but summer will be better,
Thanks for video. I had plans to visit Asahikawa and Wakkanai over Christmas 2019. I am having second thoughts now. Wakkanai looks deserted so far to travel for almost nothing. Will try to search for more info for tourists. Otherwise I might just hang around Akita and Aomori.
