The country shares maritime borders with China, North Korea, South Korea, the Philippines, Russia, and Taiwan.
Japan is spread over 6000 islands and has a surface area of 377,915 kmΒ², making it slightly larger than Germany or somewhat smaller than the US state of California.
The country has a slowly shrinking population, and the proportion of older people is rising. In 2021, 125 million people live in Japan. The national capital and largest city is Tokyo. Other major cities are Fukuoka, Fukushima, Kobe, Kyoto, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo, Sendai, and Yokohama. The official language is Japanese.
