History documentary on Tokyo, Japan; hosted by John Beach and published by Smithsonian Channel.
It’s a city that transformed itself from a sprawl of wooden dwellings into a huge modern metropolis. Over 150 years, Tokyo has risen from the ashes twice, from an epic earthquake and a devastating series of bombings, rebuilding itself into the largest city in the world. Examine the evolution and modernization of Tokyo through digitally remastered and rarely seen colorized archival footage.

19:56 I'm surprised that there was already a place with gorgeous neon lights in 1930s.
If the Japanese won the war and destroyed the US, something tells me they wouldn't have rebuilt it and handed it back to us. We would be speaking Japanese now and hailing the Emperor.
I had never heard of the great kanto earthquake and fore until now. This footage and narration are exceptional. Great work!
Good doc butchered by bad pronunciation. Edo [eh-do] 🤦♀️ “ Ido” [ih-do] is a water well…
I wanna buy this video
Beautiful documentary. Many thanks!
It's awesome I got this history lesson for FREE
Thank you for uploading this video.
However, I am dissatisfied with what is being said.
The film's narration tells us as if the American victory brought democracy to Japan, but it's a terrible political propaganda.
The lie is obvious when you look at what kind of foreign war the United States has fought.
I love Japanese face🇯🇵👌
見たことない映像ばっかでいいっすね〜
映像の中に先祖が映ってるかもと思うとめちゃくちゃおもろいっすね
Pathetic propaganda movie. Blame Japan for trying to stand up for itself while remaining silent about GB and USA colonialism, just pathetic.
This is so freaking inspiring i just wanna visit japan so badlyyy
Nipon banzai🇯🇵
Japan had NO BUSINESS getting America into WW2! Praise God America used to be KING!…..but no more 😢
Norway has Japanese ties too.oh russia wouldnt like that now would it? Independance.wenn there are troubles with latrines a spade is required to bury it underground. So sad the diasaster.20s dresses were very nice more modest. The cloche! Oma would have made a living in those days.
Japan has yet to accept history as it is. Such a spirit should be regarded as an underdeveloped country. We must learn from Germany's acceptance of history as it is. However, Japan is a people with a lot of inferiority built up by the history of living uncivilized. The samurai group, which originally did not value human lives and did not study as short dwarfs, used to stab people and run away. He also used to cut off the head of passersby at night and test his own knife. It's all clearly written in their history. But Japan is very much in what it looks like. As a result, Japan's administration is still the slowest in the world without any substance. People who have lived only in Japan will not know. Samurai's colorful pitches were used to show that our family did well. It is a design that can never come out for the purpose of war as a soldier. Such designs are usually used for ceremonies in ordinary countries, but there is no place to wear them because they want to show off in war. A samurai wearing a samurai helmet falls down without being able to balance even if he is hit on the head. What a ridiculous bunch of dwarfs. Anyway, what these low-level Japanese did after getting their hands on guns is the same. They committed crimes in other countries as well as rape in Japan. They know they're wrong, but they never admit it. So in the end, it distorts "history" and teaches people the wrong history. I really feel sorry for those descendants now. They are not making false claims with bad intentions, they are making false claims because they have not learned anything. Embrace history, Japan.
25:40 They already had an electronic message board in 1941.
4:59 soon as I heard this bullshit I stopped watching
USA propaganda video. DISLIKE

This documentary didn't mention how Japanese killed millions of Koreans in Japan during the great kanto earthquake. Koreans were blamed for the disaster and we're killed openly in Brod daylight
I came here to see Tokyo in Color not some bullshidy US war propaganda 🙄
Japan got what they deserved…
Utter annihilation
Good Japan mainland tourism trip idea I had when I planned my own travel there (sadly never came true due to visa woes, I am Brazilian 🇧🇷 and require an embassy visa):
Visit Tokyo (Kanto) for the modern viewpoint of Japan, then visit Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima (Kansai) for truly preserved ancient history and culture, with relatively minimal external influence regarding Tokyo.
Hokkaido and Okinawa also have distinct historical and cultural aspects to this day, and were also far enough to not suffer the same influence of Tokyo, and are also worth their while if you visit them while holding the right point of view for each region.
Don't be going to Tokyo expecting ancient history, don't go to Kansai area expecting extremely westernized large cities (they're large but not as westernized).
Nara and Kyoto are also infamously and notoriously salty even among national Japanese relations and culture over their lost capital statuses to Edo and Tokyo. Still great cities for true ancient Japanese history and culture though mind the culture shocks and occasional shut-in and xenophobic mentality.
Japan really developed quickly. In 2 decades they've gone from old to new empire… in Germany we're lucky if our road is getting new tarmac at all after 20 years. Japan on the other hand built a mega city. Then on the other hand.. they've invaded and killed people like flies. There are always two sides of a coin one is beautiful, the other one ugly.
