We’re in beautiful Amami Oshima, halfway between Okinawa and Kagoshima. I’m here on a project to develop appropriate tourism for this area which in 2021 was listed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. I’ll be walking around a small port town with a local professional guide and fun guy, Seiya Kokabu. He speaks English fluently, so have your questions ready!
Our start time might be advanced or delayed depending on the circumstances.

  1. Wow! what a special place and experience that could be for someone wanting to discover Japan as few do.
I found Seiya Kokabu's 'Amanico Guide Service' on Trip Advisor for Kayaking & Canoeing, and might you be able to include his website or contact in the description?
    Thanks!

  2. My wife and I went on a hilariously poor-planned trip to Amami Oshima a few years back and almost got lost in an area without cell phone reception, so I'm glad the stream worked out. Looking at the map again, I'm reminded that there's a lot we have yet to see there!
My recommendation for mangrove kayakking: don't use two-person kayaks. If the tide has gone out, someone's going to have to get out and push/pull on the journey to the mangroves.
