Top things to do, eat, and see when you’re in Tokyo, Japan! Budget tips and advice for first time travelers.
Come join us in part two of our adventure in Japan as we visit the Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, and explore the famous Takeshita Street.
In this second part of my Tokyo Travel Vlog series, my travel bae, Corinna, and I first visit the Meiji Jingu Shrine. This iconic shrine is so beautiful! You almost forget you’re in the middle of a large city. Shintoism is a traditional Japanese religion, and this is a Shinto shrine. Before you enter, there is a large archway called a Torii. The custom is to bow before you go in and before you leave. There’s no admission fee. It’s quite large, so you can spend a good amount of time here. It’s nice to just walk around and take in the shrine’s beauty; however, there are also places to eat, buy good luck charms (these make great souvenirs), and put coins in offertory boxes to pay respects and make a wish if you want. This is a must-see while you’re in Tokyo!
Next, we head to Harajuku. There is a lot of shopping and food here. First, we go to the Tokyu Plaza Mall, which is famous for all the mirrors that cover the front of the building. It’s usually super crowded, but if there aren’t a lot of people, you can get a good Insta pic going up or down the escalator. There are several stories of retail shops. The top floor is a Starbucks with a beautiful outside patio/garden area and a great view.
After, we meet up with my amazing friend Maryssa, who lives in Japan, to explore the famous Takeshita Street. It’s extremely crowded here, so watch your pockets! There’s a lot of shopping and food here. We first go to one of the many Purikura photo sticker booth spots. They’re all over Japan, but there are a lot of them on Takeshita Street. They are usually kind of hidden, so you have to search around to find one. When you get inside, there are usually just a ton of different photobooths, so you have to find the one you want to do. These are not your typical photo booth though! They basically make you look super pretty, almost like a cartoon. When you’re done taking the photos, you go into a separate booth to digitally decorate them before they print out. This is just a super silly thing that I love doing in Japan! The Purikura really works up an appetite, so we topped everything off with a crepe from one of the many crepe shops on Takeshita Street.
