Kagoshima 鹿児島市 is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the “Naples of the Eastern world” for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and emblematic stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.
Sakurajima 桜島 is an active composite volcano (stratovolcano).The volcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings.The most recent eruption started on February 5, 2016. On 13 September 2016 a team of experts from Bristol University and the Sakurajima Volcano Research Centre in Japan suggested that the volcano would again have a major eruption within the following 30 years.
