Heavy snowfalls battered Japan on Wednesday, paralyzing transportation and killing at least one person. An exceptionally cold weather front and extreme low pressure systems brought snowfall and strong winds as early as Tuesday. Forecasts indicate that the phenomenon could continue until Thursday with snowfall also in Tokyo and Osaka.

Niigata prefecture, on the island of Honshū in Japan, was hit by a violent winter episode on Wednesday. Heavy snowfall and wind caused a lot of disruption in the city. The snow also hampered the movement of workers and transport in many Japanese cities.
