I had the opportunity to visit a very unique place — a sustainable coral reef farm called “Sango Batake” in Yomitan, Okinawa. What makes it unique is that it’s a land-based facility where they cultivate corals and transplant them one-by-one back into the sea. They succeeded in the world’s first transplantation of cultivated corals. Not only can you see a lot of corals here, but they also have a lot of fish and sea turtles, all in a nice artistically constructed facility that looks like something out of a fantasy movie. The place is located directly on the beach and was severely damaged during a typhoon in 2018 but was successfully rebuilt and reopen.
