It was during December when we travelled to Oahu Hawaii, the third largest of Hawaii’s 6 main islands.
O’ahu is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, and if you get to visit this island paradise you’ll quickly see why. It is home to many beaches, many hikes, natural beauty, the city life of Honolulu, and famous world-class surf.
As it is the Christmas season, the places have also been decorated and very festive, bustling with holiday makers.
However, everything such as accommodation and airfare are more expensive because it is high peak season.
And there seems to be a queue for everything especially the popular restaurants.

How did we go around?
It’s a lot of walking 😊 but it’s walking at leisure, no rush.
We mainly used public transportation, taxis, the bus (The Bus), Waikiki trolleys, shared transport and airport shuttles.

What did we do?
From waterfalls, beaches, and waves, to nightlife, crafty eats, and shopping, there’s no shortage of things to do in Oahu.

How did we stay connected?
• There’s WI-FI in our accommodation.
• We also bought a pre-paid SIM card from the ABC Store.

TIPS:
When to go:
TIP:
• During spring (mid-April to mid-June) and autumn (September to mid-December) are the off seasons in Oahu.
o You may find the better rates and fewer crowds hence less queueing 😊
• But if you are a surfer, October to November is a great time to visit. For advanced surfers looking for the biggest swells, between December and February will be best.
Where to stay:
TIP:
• Oahu have various options for accommodation depending on your preference and budget.
• When booking, especially hotels in Oahu, make sure to look at pricing as they charge hefty taxes plus nightly resort fees.
How did we go around?
TIP:
• Best option is to hire a car to explore the island on your own timing and pace.
• There are heaps of rental cars in the island including at the airport.
What to do:
TIP: For hiking;
• Diamond Head – Do a hike early the morning to watch the sunrise at the top. There’s a fee to hike and reservations are required. Check the site, gostateparks.hawaii.gov/diamondhead for details.
• The Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail in Waimanalo (on the East Shore) is one of the most popular Oahu lighthouse hikes. This hike is just two miles or a 3.2 kilometers, round-trip! The lighthouse, which was built in 1909, is still functional.
TIP: A full day trip to the North Shore would be good to explore the beaches where you can also enjoy swimming during the summer months
• eat at the shrimp trucks, Giovanni’s is highly recommended;
• and explore the Hale’iwa surf town for its quaint shops, restaurants, and art galleries!
• Go to Sunset Beach to watch the sunset😊
• And the Turtle Beach, – apparently one; of the best places on Oahu to see wild Green sea turtles in their natural habitat!
TIP: If booking for a Circle Island tour, look closely at the itinerary as there are some variations. For example there’s one that includes swimming with the turtles, or the Waimea Valley, or Kualoa Ranch, based on the ones I saw.
How to stay connected?
TIP:
• There should be free Wi-Fi in every hotel and other vacation rentals but good to double check.
• Also, if obtaining a pre-paid SIM, ensure your mobile or cell phone is “unlocked” meaning it’s not tied to a certain carrier network.
