The Sunrise Izumo/Seto sleeper express is the only regularly scheduled overnight sleeper express train in Japan that runs on JR lines.
This video shows a 10-hour trip from Takamatsu station to Tokyo station on the cheapest seat of the Sunrise Seto train.
The Sunrise Izumo (departing from Izumoshi station) and Sunrise Seto (departing from Takamatsu station) will be connected at Okayama station.
Sunrise Izumo/Seto tickets can be reserved at JR ticket counters. Or you can make a reservation at the URL below, but it is a Japanese website (JR West).

  1. I became friends with the Thai person who was sitting in the seat next to me. The "Nobi-nobi-Seat" (cheapest seat) is not a private room, but it is recommended because it allows for opportunities to meet people.
