Founded in 1924, Kyoto Botanical Gardens is also known as Kyoto Prefectural Gardens. With an area of 240,000 sqm., and its 12,000 species of plants in its collection, this botanical garden is the oldest and most comprehensive public botanical garden in Japan.

A conservatory was also built which houses different varieties of plants from different latitudes. From tropical plants to dessert cacti to high altitude mountain flowers the collection is vast and diverse.

The Kyoto Botanical Gardens showcases seasonal floras with its 450 cherry blossom trees which is spectacular to see during spring, the greens and different species of flowers during summer, the red maple and yellow ginko leaves that covers the garden grounds in autumn and the winter flowers in the cold summer months.

It is also easily accessible via train from Kyoto Central Station. You can also explore Kyoto Central Station as a side trip which is worth of your time when you visit Kyoto. All in all we enjoyed Kyoto and will definitely visit again.
