People in Chinese cities mostly live in apartments and because of the rising prices, many people are forced to live in smaller and smaller places. However, in the Chinese countryside the houses are really big and spacious. My wife’s grandparents’ have a 5 bedroom house in a village between Yangzhou and Taizhou and I absolutely love it. it's amazing that Xiao talks to her grandparents in Mandarin. The local dialect is a little different than Yangzhou city's. Now think of it, China's development has been super fast in the last 2 generations and people moved around a lot.
