The closer we get to our rendezvous point, the less what we see around looks like the Japan we think we know – the most technologically advanced nation with a space exploration program and the world’s fastest experimental magnetic levitation trains capable of travelling up to 370 mph; a country that has developed robots to assist the elderly and to work on radioactively contaminated sites.

Japanese corporations are among the leaders on the global scene. We all know that Japanese cars, watches, cameras and musical instruments are of top quality. Japan is a leader in terms of life expectancy that exceeds 84 years. It is the third-largest economy in the world by nominal GDP even though the country has next to no mineral resources and a tiny territory, and only 30% of it is habitable. So how come that this advanced nation is also home to some very serious organized crime?

Leaving the ultramodern neon-lit streets behind us, we are entering Eastern Tokyo and getting close to an area called San’ya. This cheap housing district has the fame of the city’s slums, but the truth is that it used to give shelter to day laborers who came to the city to claim menial jobs and were paid by the hour.

We are now in the Kabuki-chō district. In an otherwise extremely law-obedient country, this district is considered among the seediest you can find. Not only does it harbor abundant criminal activity; it is also home to many Yakuza gangs, Japan’s organized crime syndicates.

  2. Having lived in Japan from the early 80s-late 90s, the Yaks pretty much still ran the Red light districts in every city. Never seen any violence, seen them parade in their skivvies showing off full body tatts in the streets and seen the BosoZuka (motor scooter punks) riding around making and noise revving their engines. They are not all Thugs, some are prominant business men. Liked the vid and subbed.

  3. Can I have a job? I'll like, I don't know – Carry the cameras and shit around or something, learn to record professionally or something with you guys

  4. Hi there is a channel with content in Portuguese it's called '' Adilson está aqui '' and it's even dubbed is it official or are they stealing your content ?

  5. Wow, all that… And, not a single mention of WWII and how after the surrender, Yakuza organized to resist the occupation and uphold the ancient warrior code of Bushido.

  6. stumbled upon your channel today, im impressed by the amount of work you manage to put into your contont! keep it bud!

  7. Also one of the highest suicide rates, high sexism , black companies, high sex crime never punished, and koroshi – death from overwork – is a common thing. Yes Japan is great for so many reasons. It's a very harsh country if anything from the above list happens to you. THere are definitely dead bodies in Kabukicho.

  8. I love the fact that even in ‘poorer’ areas, the Japanese keep their country clean. Which is quite the opposite to the rest of the world, where poor areas tend to be sh*t holes.

  9. I love you guys. Please stop wtih all the music. You have people speaking different languages, someone over talking in english and that stupid snare drum music. Too much!
