Marine Steve and I made a beeline to a small street near the Kagoshima train station for Pork Tonkatsu, Japanese for a good ‘ole deep fried pork cutlet or schnitzel, more popular than chicken in Japan.
Kagoshima is a leading producer of pork, and the Kagoshima kurobuta (black pig) is perhaps the most highly regarded variety. Once we found the recommended restaurants by stopping to point at Japanese characters written down by guide, it wasn’t easy to decide on sirloin, filet, and other cuts of black pork. It was yummy but I couldn’t decipher any difference in taste between the “black” pig or any ordinary pig… What do I know…
