京都観光２日目。夜の伏見稲荷大社の翌日、早朝の清水寺を体験してきました。朝早い時間の清水寺は空いていてゆっくり拝観できると聞いて、京阪の清水五条駅近くに宿をとったものの、開門時間の６時には間に合わず…。それでも、参拝客もまばらな朝の清水寺を満喫してきました。

清水寺の本堂を支える柱は139本あります。
この139という数は仏教で重要視される素数、しかも観音菩薩の三十三変化にちなむ33番目の素数です。動画では触れていませんが、数学の世界と違って、縁起の世界では「2」は良くない数字扱いで除外するとかで、「139」 は実際は34番目の素数なのだそうです。

この話を聞いた時はとても感銘をうけましたが、実際のところは諸説あるようです。新聞社の記事だともっと柱の数が多いようですし…。

This Video-Log is about an early morning visit to Kiyomizudera, one of the most famous temples in Kyoto.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations, is very crowded with tourists during the daytime.

I found an information on the internet that Kiyomizu-dera Temple is not crowded in the early morning, so I stayed at a hotel about 1 km from Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

There are 139 pillars supporting the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera.

The number 139 is an important prime number in Buddhism, and it is the 33rd prime number associated with the legend of the thirty-three transformations of Kannon Bodhisattva.

In fact, “139” is the 34th prime number, but in the world of Buddhism, the number 2 is treated as a bad number and is counted differently from the world of mathematics.

I was very impressed when I heard this story, but it seems that there are actually various theories.

For example, newspaper articles seem to have more pillars…

So I hope you can enjoy it as a sightseeing-like story-:)
