Icy Winter Walk In Freezing Japan | Furarito Asahikawa

It’s winter in freezing Japan and on this cold winter morning we are taking a snowy walk in Asahikawa 旭川 in Hokkaido 北海道 . Asahikawa is Hokkaido’s second largest city after Sapporo, and on this snowy morning, it’s a lovely place for a walk. We start our walk at Furarito Alley ふらりーと or to give it its proper name, 5・7小路ふらりーと !  This narrow alley of izakayas and yakitori restaurants (which means grilled chicken skewers) has been a popular place for office workers to stop by after work for many years. In 2004, the people of Asahikawa decided to name it “5.7 Koji Furarito” – 5.7 referring to the area of the city where it is located. This lovely alley reflects the atmosphere of the Showa period – the post-war period in Japan, which people remember fondly. We continue our walk down though Sanroku-gai, the popular entertainment district of Asahikawa. It’s really a wonderful place for a nice morning walk!

凍てつく日本の冬、この寒い冬の朝、私たちは北海道の旭川で雪の中を散歩しています。旭川は札幌に次ぐ北海道第二の都市で、この雪の朝は散歩をするにはとてもいい場所です。まずは「ふらりーと横丁」、正式名称は「5・7小路ふらりーと」。 居酒屋や焼き鳥屋が並ぶこの細い路地は、昔から仕事帰りのサラリーマンが立ち寄る場所として親しまれてきました。2004年、旭川市民によって「5.7小路ふわりと」と命名されました。この素敵な路地には、人々の記憶に残る戦後の昭和の雰囲気が漂っています。旭川の歓楽街である三六街を歩きます。朝の散歩にはもってこいの場所です。
