And if you have yet to do so, be sure to press that subscribe bell, so that you don’t miss any cultural updates. Subscribe! BLACK is ancient; in fact, it was dark prior to God saying “Let there be light!” The etymology of BLACK is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root –bhleg- which means “to burn or to shine”, and the word BLACK is defined as “the achromatic color of least lightness characteristically perceived to belong to objects that neither reflect nor transmit light.” BLACK waves proudly from nearly 6% of the world’s national flags including Jamaica and Germany, symbolizing determination and strength. There is also the infamous black pirate flag known as the Jolly Roger instilling fear across the oceans. In the 13th century black fashion is seen as signs of both nobility and religious humility. As we approach modern times, we see intimidating black judicial robes, formal black tuxedos, and little black dresses. But if black is not a color, then what is it? Meet BLACK’s nemesis, the color white. In the 17th century, English physicist Sir Isaac Newton reveals white’s secret identity as ROY G. BIV. Each letter represents the few color frequencies we see on the much larger electromagnetic spectrum. So when you look at the world around you, it creates a multitude of hues by adding or subtracting certain colors from white. I would get very frustrated with people when they would call me black because I thought they were either colorblind or ignorant. Obviously, my skin is brown not black, not to mention that the term is often used pejoratively, and to disconnect from one’s African culture. But ask yourself what color is your mirror? Likewise, when you look at a person’s skin tone, that is only the color that they are reflecting into your eyes, not the color they are absorbing, right? Therefore, if you are pure white that means that you reflect off the entire rainbow leaving you BLACK, and if I am indeed pure BLACK, then I reflect nothing, and absorb all the light making me WHITE. Kind of casts colorism into a whole new, light, huh?
