Ishikawaya (石川屋) sells super classic and nostalgic chukasoba style shoyu ramen in Atami, one of the most popular beach and onsen cities in Japan. This ramen shop is popular with Atami city locals and tourists alike for its truly nostalgic way of making ramen.
Ishikawaya is run by an an elderly couple, who seem to have been in the ramen making business for quite a while and have honed in on this particular style of ramen. While there are an incredible amount of topping options, the soup base is always the same shoyu ramen soup, combined with very old school thin and lightly curly ramen noodles.
The soup itself is made with a chicken based broth and has a solid soy sauce flavor, that is a bit on the sweeter side. You can also clearly taste some ginger aroma in the background. The flavor as well as the experience itself are very nostalgic and kind of old fashioned, so be aware of this and don’t expect something like the high end shoyu ramen in Tokyo.
Another word of warning: If you see any kind of queue in front of the shop, expect a waiting time of at least an hour until you get your food. Unfortunately, the owner and his wife aren’t the fastest anymore and it just takes them some time to pump out their very popular ramen. When I arrived, there were roughly ten people standing outside of the shop in front of me in line and it took around 1.5 hours until I received my ramen. If you don’t have time to spare, maybe consider going to a different ramen shop. So it’s maybe not the best spot for a quick bite in Atami.

Did you know that Japan actually has quite a few very nice beaches? Would you like me to explore some more ramen in beach towns in the future?
That looks so delicious! And you seem very friendly so I had to subscribe 😀 Weiter so!
Atami looks beautiful, so did that bowl.
I am always really impressed by your camera work. It’s harder than one would think to film a ramen bowl and get good results.
