We will start today’s walking tour of Prague from Lesser Town Square, and after passing under the Charles Bridge, we will continue on Kampa Island!

00:00 Malá Strana (Lesser Town of Prague) is a district of Prague, Czech Republic, and one of its most historic neighborhoods. ​It is on the left (west) bank of the river Vltava, on the slopes just below Prague Castle. The name distinguishes it from the more prominent districts of Prague on the right bank, with which it is linked by the Charles Bridge.
Initially, when it was founded in 1257, the district was called the New Town beneath Prague Castle (Czech: Nové Město pod Pražským hradem). When Charles IV founded the New Town of Prague in 1348, Malá Strana was renamed the Lesser Town of Prague (Czech: Menší Město pražské). In 1419-1420 the Malá Strana was burnt down by Hussites. In 1541 the town was strongly damaged by a fire that killed fifty people. After this fire, the city was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and many palaces of nobility were built there.

02:30 Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a medieval stone arch bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV and finished in the early 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built in 1158–1172, which a flood severely damaged in 1342. This new bridge was initially called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been referred to as “Charles Bridge” since 1870.
The bridge is 516 meters (1,693 ft) long and nearly 10 meters (33 ft) wide. Following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two on the Lesser Quarter side (including the Malá Strana Bridge Tower) and one on the Old Town side, the Old Town Bridge Tower. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, mostly baroque-style, originally erected around 1700, but now all have been replaced by replicas.
Charles Bridge has suffered several disasters and witnessed many historical events. Czech legend has it that construction began on Charles Bridge at 5:31 am on 9 July 1357, with the first stone being laid by Charles IV himself. This time was crucial to the Holy Roman Emperor because he was a firm believer in numerology and felt that this specific time, which formed a palindrome (1357 9/7 5:31), was a numerical bridge and would imbue Charles Bridge with additional strength. The bridge was completed 45 years later, in 1402.

04:50 The Čertovka (Devil’s Canal) is situated in the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana). The Čertovka takes its water from the Vltava, and after 740 m, it flows back into that river. There are several medieval mills along its course. The canal was probably built in the 12th century by the Knights of Malta,[1] who added a portion of land to the right and created an island called Kampa.

10:30 Kampa (also Na Kampě) is an island in the Vltava river in central Prague on the side of Malá Strana. Charles Bridge crosses its northern tip and is connected to the island by the street Na Kampě. It is separated from Malá Strana by a narrow artificial channel to the west called the Devil’s Stream (Čertovka), a waterway dug to power water mills (no longer existent). It is supposedly named after a sharp-tongued woman who lived in a local home called the Seven Devils.
