Today I’m back in Kuala Lumpur for the first time in 12 years and I plan to eat everything in sight! This is my first time eating street food in Kuala Lumpur, or anywhere in Malaysia for that matter, on the channel!
Today was my first time eating Nasi Lamak in Lualar Lumpur so I was eager to see how it compared to versions I’ve had abroad.
I headed to one of the most famous Nasi Lamak restaurants in Kuala Lumpur called Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kg Baru which has been operating since 1963!
All in all it was a solid first Nasi Lemak, if I went bank though, I’d just get the beef rendang as it was by far my favourite.
The two monster plates cost me 31 Malaysian Ringgit which is £5.85 / $7.10 or 237 THB

Oh no🤦♂️..for the first time you eat Nasi Lemak..just take the basic dish..egg,anchovies,cucumber and sambal..(you can feel the real favor)..🤣
Gary, I spent many months living and traveling around Malaysia. Obviously, I ate loads of the food there. The ONLY food I miss from there is Assam Laksa and if you didn't have that you seriously missed out!

I’m trying to persuade my son to move to the far east when he graduates. Quality of life, weather, cost of living they are much better than the UK. This country is going down the pan everyday. NHS, social care, cost of living, transport, weather, etc they are all in a mess, cannot see improvement and progress in the near medium future.

Actually, there are many different tastes and flavours of nasi lemak, depending on the preferences of the cooks. However, the main ingredients, which are anchovy sambal and coconut milk cooked rice, are practically identical. Only locals who are able to judge the true flavour of nasi lemak are aware of the many places that serve mouth-watering nasi lemak. Although nasi lemak is often relatively simple, it tastes best when paired with superb anchovies sambal, cucumber, hard boiled eggs and peanuts as a complementary breakfast food. However, many vendors now provide it with a variety of side dishes, as if it were a noon meal.

Indians usually do less sugar in their sambal nasi lemak. Myb try a mamak or an indian restaurant doing nasi lemak.

I just had my simple nasi lemak with just sambal sotong as my dinner..the simpler, the better..hehe ✌🏻😎
If you go to South of peninsular Malaysia state, Like Muar district in Johor state, in rural town their Sambal less sweet but more spicey i think, in rural or town of Muar, rural places like Parit Jawa!!! they still got less sweets sambal and mildly hot not super hot!!! This because KL under influence Northen peoples and also indonesian taste!!!
One missing condiment in that nasi lemak….Peanut…… the best nasi lemak when you eat take away nasi lemak that wrapped in banana leaf, all the flavours & aromas trapped in banana leaf…
not curry sauce but rendang gravy. curry is something more to indian dishes. and indian curry does not using galangal or lemon grass.
The basic nasi lemak has sweet sambal is because to reduce spiciness, and to complement salty fried anchovies and enhance coconut flavour. It is true when people said having too much side dishes will kill the harmony of nasi lemak.

If you love Rendang recommend you to go to Lemang To'ki, lemang+rendang is another popular Malay dish
Hi Gary, thanks for trying our food. By the way, where are you from? Do you mind a bit of lesson on our Malaysian culinary coz you seems to generalize our food a bit too much.
1st thing for you to know is that rendang has its root in Indonesia – not Thailand. Our Indonesian friends are going to smack you if they know of this. Already they are not happy with us claiming rendang is from M'sia.
2nd, rendang or sambal is not curry. Curry has its origin from subcontinent of India. Not similar at all to our sambal/rendang.
3rd is that our sambal is made a bit sweeter to suit our western/far east friends who can't handle the spiciness of the sambal.
4th, nasi lemak tend to have natural sweetness from coconut milk, the main ingredient. We do not put any sugar in our rice.
Lastly, nasi lemak is actually a simple food for breakfast with rice, anchovy, sambal, hard boiled egg, peanut & cucumber. And you are suppose to mix it when eating nasi lemak. All the rendang or anything else is an extra. Please don't lump it together as nasi lemak.

Hi Gary… Ty for your honest feedback on the Nasi Lemak. You can have both beef and chicken rendang together, a bit of the sambal, pegedil (deep fried whipped potato with chives) pronounced as per ger dell, lots of fried anchovies, cucumber and fried peanuts. When you come to the East Coast Terengganu… Try Nasi Dagang, Laksam, Laksa with red gravy …. And the local delicacies …. Look me up
The true presentation of the nasi lemak was to wrap the rice inside it while it was hot & steamy which when it cools down (around 5 minutes), its add a unique aromatic and flavor to the nasi lemak itself.
It is recommended to be serve & eaten with the basic set of condiments (wanjo didn't include fried ground peanut). Any add-on side dishes should be minimal so not to overtake the sambal taste. My personnal fav would be either marinated fried chicken or the cockle sambal.

By the way, I personally don't like to have nasi lemak with too much of the sambal and rendang going on – just too overwhelming. In fact, the best for me would be rice, a little bit of sambal, fried egg and a small amount of chicken/beef curry along with some peanuts and anchovies. That way you get the taste of the rice shining through.

mixing all is the key with every nasi dish in malaysia, else it might be too sweet or too salty if u eat it one by one.. that2 crunchy anchovies is there to give salty and crunch to that sweet samal mixing it all with the santan nasi would be falvour explosion
