  1. More of a personal shock, not so much a shock to others, was when I visited Churchill's War Room soon after it had been discovered (WWII is my fave reading topic, and he's my choice for best pure leader of all time). I was blown away that I was standing in the room from which he had directed England's war effort! Also, I read that nothing had been touched or moved – and it does look just like a modern office at the end of a typical day – everything turned off or put down neatly at the end of a work day (!), but nothing obviously arranged for show.

  2. Visiting the great houses is an activity which itself has strong socio-cultural connotations. The sticker that you put in your car windscreen to show that you are a National Trust member so you can get free parking is itself considered a status symbol.

The police are your interface with the state's power to help.

  3. Each county within the UK has its own character with unique beauty and attractions, the UK has so much more than London.

  4. When I took my family on a trip visiting England Scotland and Ireland we were treated so well and made to feel so welcome it made me so embarrassed being American and needing direction on many things that most people already know. To all the people who made our trip so enjoyable I really want to thank you and let you know you have left an lasting impression on our lives.

  5. One thing that shocked me on my first visit to London was the beautiful summer weather. I was there in late May, and got a sunburn from riding on the upper deck of a tour bus. Why would you need sunscreen in England in May, right? Who would bring that? Well, me, from now on.

  6. I would not call somebody from Scotland a Brit or British as Roman Catholic Scots are mostly of Irish decent and don't take kindly to it. So I would just call the Scots or Scottish it's just easier that way

  7. I visited Orlando, a cop pulled my cab over and told the cabbie there was a diversion ahead, the cabbie asked me why I looked surprised, I said I d never seen a cop with a gun before he said "That wasn't a gun " AND HE PULLED THR BIGGEST PUMP GUN I EVER SAW FROM UNDER HIS SEAT and said "That's a gun!"

  8. spot on about police! I LOVE the police here! they are (for the most part) SO polite, smiley and helpful!

  9. just to add to the point at 7:43 the only police who carry guns are armed police and they are pretty rare. You will see them sometimes walking around in pairs but their main job is on callout. The regular police carry tasers as people here don't carry guns. Also if you see/hear and ambulance/police car behind you with lights on always move to the other lane or let people push Infront of you

  10. The "terrible British food" stereotype stems (quite fairly actually) from the 1970s and possibly 1980s.
    Forget that now.
However the portions will typically be smaller than in the US.

  11. I am from England. I extremely recommend going outside of London. I recommend Chartwell (Winston Churchill’s house), Isle of Wight and Birling Gap.

  12. I love all your tips about the various places you visit. I’m actually heading to Scotland, London, and Reykjavik end of August 2022 and watching your videos has been tremendously helpful in deciding what to do and not do. Thank you!

  13. The weather is usually always & mostly fine a hell of a lot of the time & it can be an annoying meme how some folks can exaggerate about any other. You'll get plenty of dry, sunny & warm weather, especially everywhere that's not up in the north west. There can be weeks at a time of stable, consistent, dry, sunny & warm weather in all of the parts such as the central, east & south of the country, even in the winter sometimes. If you visit at all times of year, less than ideal weather would only occur usually in or around the winter months. You can get only 1 day out of several weeks where there is any rain at all & that is usually only a light shower on the 1.0mm or above threshold & with all the rest of that period of days & weeks being sunny & dry.

  14. Of course, compared to much of the US, the weather in England looks great, with just as much sunny & dry weather as anything.
In the US, you're going to be dealing with snow, hurricanes, tornadoes plus at times freezing, gale force wind horizontal style rain.

  15. I think you should have put more emphasis on the fact that the weather in England is more often just as sunny & dry also, sometimes even for long stretches of many days or weeks. Even on the days that there is any rain at all in England or the UK, it's usually only a light brief shower / showers. On the occasions the weather does suck, that's no different / just the same as many other countries, including the US, which have far worse & extreme levels of bad weather that undoubtedly sucks much more usually most of the time.

  16. Whenever anybody talks about rain, I always laugh…. It really does not rain much for the main bulk of England at all. Currently living in the centre of England, which would give a good average representation of the country. As I write this message, it's just another, bright, sunny day here, the same as most / a lot of other days. It hardly ever rains here, on average you will get a shower or intermittent showers on 1 day out every fortnight roughly, sometimes longer, even many weeks. Less than 24 inches of rain here annually on average, far less than half the amount of for eaxmple, New York US. Further south & east in England it is even drier, less than 20 inches per year. Apart from right up the north west, some of England is pretty dry and sunny with decent weather, especially from the centre north, down. Again, you're gonna get consistent, adjacent days with bright, sunny & dry weather a lot of the time as well.

  17. dude you've said the same 8 or 9 things in all your videos about England/London:
    – Try the pubs.
    – Try the food.
    – The weather is bad, but not terrible.
    – English people are polite.
    – Dont cut in line.
    – London isnt all of England.
    – London is expensive.
    – People drive on the left.

You could actually list some more things to do, and then have a DIFFERENT list of things to NOT do, rather than just listing "Dont forget to try X" as a Dont.

  18. Minding your Ps and Q's doesn't mean Politeness and Queues, the commonly accepted understanding is P's and Q's is Please's and Thankyous (q's because it rhymes) although it's not entirely clear how it came about, that's the understanding. We queue well … because we are mostly polite.

  19. The last one only shocks Americans. The rest of the world knows about this stuff

  20. If you see Stonehenge, you're closer to it than you think. It really is that small.

  21. 7.27 Apparently why it can be tough to sell UK police dramas to the US, its counterintuitive to many in the states that the police don't have guns lol

  22. His comments about the horrors of English food is out of date by at least 20 years. When going to the US a few years ago we, stayed overnight in a hotel in Manchester before catching our flight. The meal we had in a nearby pub that evening was the best food we tasted the whole holiday.

  23. When I was there in 1980, we went to see Stonehenge on a Sunday. Afterward, we went into Salisbury to eat. We found out everything was closed on Sunday. 🙁

  24. The 'Q's in P&Qs actually comes from 'P'lease and than'Q'/Kyou. NOTHING TO DO WITH QUEUES !!!!

  25. Mark my friend, please do tell me where oh where I could stay in a 1000 year-old house in England…

  26. It is very expansive. I do not like the food at all. Except fish n chips.
I had the most expensive and worst breakfast ever there.
    Their chocolate is terrific though.

  27. There actually is very little difference between Scotland,England and Wales having lived in all these places the culture stays pretty much the same.

  28. If you ask most English people (myself included) where to get tea and crumpets most of them wouldn't have a f'in clue 🤣 maybe 60 years ago 😂

  29. Just got back from London/England. Your advice helped so much Walter, thanks 🙂. The one thing I wish I knew before I went was to make sure to bring another suitcase for the crumpets, biscuits, Jam, and chocolate I would need to take home😂
