Sankei-en is one of the most beautiful gardens I have seen. Located in Yokohama, they are very much worth the 40 minutes trip from Tokyo. What I liked about Sankei-en was that it was a skillful combination of natural forest and landscaped gardens. I loved its beautiful ponds with ducks and colorful koi fish swimming in the water, the streams and paths going through bamboo groves and plum trees promising fantastic views in the spring. But Sankei-en is more than a park. It is an open air ethnographic museum where you can see building with historical value brought from all over Japan. My favorite was the huge hatchet roofed Hara house that used to belong to the family of the founder of the Gardens: Tomitaro “Sankei” Hara, an extremely wealthy silk merchant. I spent about an hour in the park and couldn’t see it all so I am planning another visit in the early spring to see the plum blossoms.
Sankei-en was opened in 1906 and to this days continues to attract thousands of visitors in every season. Come in the spring for the blooming plum and cherry trees, in the summer for the beautiful lotus flowers covering the ponds and in the autumn for the fiery colors of the foliage. And, don’t miss the two Chinese pavilions just outside the South exit. With their curved roofs and bright red color of the walls they are so delightful.
If you are in the area and would like to see the gardens with me, drop me a line – I organize private tours to Yokohama and the Sankei Gardens and would love to show you both.
