D: Hey, Maple?
Last time you were telling me about how you went to a French restaurant with your friend, Atsuko, after working out at her gym.
M: Oh, ya, I was so exhausted from the workout that I couldn’t finish telling you about it.
D: How do you feel today?
M: I’m so full of energy.
D: Great.
So where did you go? And I want to tell you about my idea for our trip abroad.
M: I can’t wait to hear all about it.
D: Absolutely. But you first.
M: Sure.
After my workout, Atsuko took me to a fabulous French restaurant for lunch.
The name of the restaurant was Re:VERSI.
D: I’ve never heard of that place.
M: She told me that they opened around 2 years ago, so it’s pretty new.
D: Oh.
What gorgeous décor.
M: Ya, it had a really welcoming ambiance.

M: This was the set that Atsuko ordered for us.
D: Oh, nice. I wish I could read Japanese.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll explain what the dishes were one by one.
D: Thanks.

M: First, we got this red snow crab with onion mousse.
D: Wow, it’s beautiful. And there’s caviar and edible flowers on top.

M: Next, they brought out a jewelry box.
D: What? A jewelry box?
M: Yes, and there were beautifully arranged vegetables in it.
D: It’s the most wonderful presentation I’ve ever seen.
M: This dish was called “Seasonal Vegetable Terrine” on the menu.
D: Ah. Terrine means “clay pot” in French, and this clay pot is used to make the traditional French dish also called terrine that has small pieces of meat or vegetables that are pressed into a rectangular shape.
M: Wow, how do you know that?

M: The next dish is potato soup with scallops.
D: Why is it foamy?

M: The last course was the dessert called Nougat Glacé.

D: Well, that’s also French. Nougat is like toffee made with egg and glacé means frozen. It looks like caramel ice cream, is that right? It looks good.

D: By the way, I’ve been planning our oversees trip lately.
M: Great. Which country are you planning on?
D: I’m thinking of visiting the US.
M: The US? Japanese people usually call it America, right?
D: That’s correct.
M: I think that’s a very popular destination.
D: Totally.
I have some friends on the east coast in places such as New Jersey and Boston, so what do you think about going to visit them there?
M: New Jersey? Boston?
I’ve never heard of those places.
D: Have you heard of New York?
M: Yes. “Friends” is my favorite TV show, and I’ve been learning English from it.
D: Oh, ya, the setting of the series is in New York City.
New York is on the east coast, so we could visit there, too, if you like.
M: That sounds really exciting!
D: American culture is totally different from Japanese culture.
We’ll be able to see and learn new things and expand our horizons.
M: I love seeing and learning new things!
D: True.

Even though travel restrictions have eased lately, they’re still stricter than they used to be before the pandemic.
