Japan has a long tradition of enjoying roasted chestnuts in the fall season. Here’s an example of how festival vendors here make a real show of the roasting process.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS

The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast’s track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination

The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don’t bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

  1. wow a cannon for roasting chestnuts, i think it still takes a month or two till we have them here

  2. I just adore these types of videos, Kurt! Shizuoka knows how to kick off the fall season right! If only the video had Smell-O-Vision… Do share more on this magical time of year. It's fascinating to see other cultures' fall traditions, especially Japan's! And kudos for bringing back that glorious Goofy hat!

  3. I'll bet the locals have no problem with you labeling yourself the Goofy Gaijin.

  4. so that's how they split it open and l like the concept of design like an old steam engine too. they taste wonderful and excellent in aiding digestion. good source of fibre to keep one regular. i was in Kyoto last year and saw a man at the busy intersection at night burning wood, on a converted wagon, wondering that's a true way to keep warm but it wasn't till the next night i was walking back in the opposite direction did i see his produce. the ever alert, keen traveler I am, not…

  5. ぽん菓子を作る機械で栗を焼いているのかな?とても美味しそう!

  6. Wow, that's a totally different cooking process than when I was in Japan 92-96. The other method is a steel pot lined with some kind of concrete and a paddle that spins around mixing them. I really miss the hot chestnuts and then the truck or cart that would go around with wood fired sweet potatoes. Yum
