We were able to take a tour around one of the few publicly accessible Cold War nuclear weapons control facilities. This site was decommissioned after the 1991 START Treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and the United States.
This will be a different kind of video for us, as you will see. We take a back seat so that our wonderful tour guide Melissa Johnson can fill us all in on the knowledge she has of this fascinating facility.

A special thank you to Melissa Johnson, our tour guide.

  1. Fascinating glimpse into some relics of the Cold War Steve and Andrea, but we didn't see much of you guys!

  2. Mushroom clouds and brainstorms."War Pigs." Yee-Haa! Had a chance to buy one, way back when.. In retrospect? Maybe i should have.🙂Remember, if you see one incoming, climb under your desk. It'll be easier for them to ID you.

  3. “Gly”: Fun fact: "Missiles protecting missiles" was the strategy behind missile field layouts. Only a ground burst or ground penetrating detonation could destroy a silo complex and if that happened it would throw tons of debris into the atmosphere. MIRV reentry vehicles containing nuclear warheads travel at speeds near Mach 25 before hitting their targets. These MIRVS would then be forced to fly through the mushroom or debris cloud and potentially be destroyed before hitting their targets. Very very nice edit guys, your getting really good at this. Thanks for the tour!

  4. That was pretty cool. Here's some fun facts. The very earliest missiles sites mainly on the west coast. Once they launch them; they could just easy explode. That would be a very big oops.

  5. As a former missile officer, I enjoyed this video. There is a missile control center near Cheyenne,WY operated by the state parks department. This summer I plan to do a video on the life of a missile launch crew.

  6. Interesting video! Looks like a lot much more comfortable living space than I would have imagined! I lived near a SAC base with a B-52 bombing wing during the Vietnam War and it was always a bit tense around town when the base went on full alert and locked down. We always thought the bombing wing most likely had a Soviet bullseye on it. It was kind of tough getting on base during normal times, but no one was allowed on or off base during a lockdown. Dad use to work as a TV repairman and got a call to come out and repair some major's TV on base. He got to the gate to be admitted and the guards did a full search of the TV van with Dad all stretched out on the ground! Once he was cleared to enter the base he told the guards to call the Major and tell him to "fix his own damn TV" and Dad turned around and went home!

  7. A very long time ago. My High School was just across the street. From an anti-missile missile site. It made for some interesting days.

  8. What an interesting piece of history that we where capable of destroying the planet. Was this on first strike by the Russians like the accounting center was in Indanapolis?

  9. I'm sorry but I liked the old style better when you're out in nature without that newfangled stuff in between. I'll probably stop watching your videos. I wish you good luck.

  10. We humans, are our own worst enemy! I remember back in the 60s, doing the duck and cover drills under our desks in elementary school. Laughable! Your desk could not save you, if a nuke went off close enough. Oh, the good old days! Very interesting tour. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Andrea and Steven, that was so interesting and informative, as well as a taste of reality. Thank you, very much… I thoroughly enjoyed this. I ask myself though, what has the world really learned from those Cold War years? excellent, as always 👏👏❤️‍🩹

  12. Informational video along with some very talented editing. This site is close enough to Minnesota had it been used to its fullest potential well I don't want to think of the aftermath. Although different from your usual videos it to captured my attention. Very well done Steven and Andrea

  13. I live in a town near a decommissioned missile site and wonder of all the defense systems in use today, how many will meet a similar fate in the near future and become just more unused junk that cost millions or billions to build having never been used. However, if they served to be a deterrent and prevented any need to be used, we should be glad. Thanks for the great video!!

  14. Boy, do I remember those days. We did bomb drills every week: the air raid sirens would go off, under your desk, on your knees, with your hands clasped behind your neck. Those were very scary times.

  15. Sorry, not why I subscribe. 3 minutes in and I’m watching someone else do …..bye

  16. Thank you for this very interesting documentary into our Nation's history. While watching it the song "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons was playing in my mind's jukebox.

  17. WOW all that effort time and money jest to kill each other cool stuff. The secret of the cold war was detente, and no one was crazy enough to push the button. Not so today, world full of crazies, that are willing to commit suicide. thank you ALL stay safe

  18. You keep saying how small the living quarters are, need to check out crew quarters on an Aircraft Carriers, Submarine ( WW2 ) and than Marine Quarters.
I lived on 3 different Aircraft Carriers for 11 months and only had 18" between bunks six high.
My Barracks were 150 men to a wing and there was 4 wings top and bottom decks. Foot Lockers, Lockers and bunk beds with concrete floors open bay. Than Boot Camp I was in those tin huts. The Air Forces Bases would be turned into hotels and put everyone in pup tents if run by the Marine Corp

  19. I think are lives change after seeing adventure's like this and opens are eye's to what most would just be hiding and not seeing the real problem's so people better start 🙏and do what ever it takes to stay peacefull 🙏❤️🏆🇺🇸🤔
