If you will be visiting Nagano, then a visit to the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a must. The park, located about an hour from Nagano in Yamanouchi, is famous for its large population of wild Japanese macaques that bathe in the hot springs or onsen in the area. The name Jigokudani means “Hell’s Valley” in reference to the boiling water and streams found in the area. Just be careful not to carry any food around the monkeys as they will snatch it from you.
