Step back in time with a visit to Arbaer, an open-air museum of restored homes, turf houses, and barns reminiscent of the way Icelanders lived hundreds of years ago. The museum is open year-round but I highly recommend the holiday festivities that run every weekend for the few weekends leading up to Christmas.

It’s open September-May from 13:00-17:00, and June-August from 10:00-17:00 with daily guided tours at 13:00.

  1. A lovely video on my favourite museum in Reykjavík 💜 My dad used to take me there a lot over the summer as a kid, because he's disabled so we both got in for free 😃

Also… just for clarity, it's 10 minutes from DOWN TOWN Reykajvík… Árbær (the neighbourhood that is named for the original farm that was turned into the museum) is a part of Reykajvík.

  2. I've visited the Arbaer Museum last year in August. In the summertime it's less crowded. There were maybe 4 other visitors besides us. Definitely worth seeing.

  3. I visited the museum in 2019 as part of of a Holland American cruise tour. We spent 5 days in different parts of Iceland. 🛳️🇮🇸 Loved it!

  4. I'm doing the round island trip next May, and was going to miss out Reykjavik this time, as I've already been there several times, but I will definately check out the museum. Thank you for that.

  5. I love this! I volunteer at a living historical farm in my state. Another site added to my list 🙂
