Dejima is a manmade island made in 1636, used as a stop for Portuguese missionaries and as a Dutch trading post. The island measured about 13,000 square meters, and much of Japan’s foreign trade and import was done here at Dejima during its sakoku, or national seclusion period from 1641 to 1859.
