나카마 강을 거슬러 올라가다 보면 울창한 맹그로브 숲과 마주한다. 바다와 강이 만나는 곳에 자라나는 맹그로브 숲은 그야말로 자연자원의 보고다. 사람의 손길이 미치지 않는 이곳을 이름조차 알려지지 않은 귀중한 야생 동식물들이 마지막 안식처로 삼고 있다. 밀림 전체가 보호구역이라 유일하게 땅에 발을 디딜 수 있는 곳은 400년 된 천연기념물 사키시마스오 나무가 서 있는 곳. 기기묘묘하게 뿌리를 내린 모습에 오랫동안 시선이 머문다.
