“Tokyo to Takayama” includes a boat ride across Ashi Lake and a visit to the fifth stage of Mt. Fuji in the clouds. Next you will see a traditional 150 year old Japanese Inn (ryokan) in Suwa.
Takayama is located in the mountains that are referred to as the Japanese alps where timber harvesting has been more important and profitable than rice farming. Sake brewers love the clear water in Takayama.
The village of Shirakawago in the Shokawa Valley has been given UNESCO designation because of the unique steep thatched roofs of the gasso-zukuri houses. The houses in this village were designed to cultivate silk worms on the upper floors.
The unique Miboro Dam, a rock-fill structure, provides electric power for Japan.
