乗り入れ航空会社数99社、乗り入れ就航都市数137都市141路線（海外115都市118路線「40か国3地域」、国内22都市23路線）、開港から2018年（平成30年）12月31日までの航空機発着回数は通算約580万回、航空旅客数は通算約10億人と名実ともに日本を代表する空の玄関口であり、日本航空、全日本空輸、ジェットスター・ジャパン、ZIPAIR Tokyo、春秋航空日本、Peach Aviation、日本貨物航空のハブ空港である。関西国際空港とともに国際線の旅客数・発着回数が国内線を大幅に上回っていることから大都市圏の国際線主体の空港という傾向が強い。2012年以降は格安航空会社（LCC）の就航により国内線も大幅に拡大しており、関西国際空港と並んでLCCの拠点空港となっている。成田空港の貿易額は日本全体の貿易額の14パーセントを占め（2015年）、1994年以降、常に港湾および空港を含めた国内最大の貿易港となっている。
