Thank you for a beautiful, snow hike. Are bears still that abundant nowadays, or are the bells mostly a remnant?
Fun fun fun fun fun, love the vids
I see it the snowfall has not been as bad (or good depending on how you view things) as in Niigata and Fukushima. I have to say this is beautiful snow walk! Soon time for snow shoes!
I love snow so much! ❄ ⛄💕
Yep, a Japanese mountain landscape with a heavy coat of snow never disappoints (unless one's out there under-equiped oc). Your camera assistant must be in pretty good shape to keep up with you 😉
So envious of the snow you're getting! I get maybe 2 or 3 good snowfalls each winter so I try to cherish the time I get to spend in the winter wonderland of my nearby forests.
I was about to get really excited for one of your ancient folklore stories….then😂.
By the way, did they ever catch who vandalized one of the trails you were on a while back…with the spray paint?
Best winter weather there is. Looks fantastic.
Takk!
LOL, Story time almost got me! I was like Wow, that's pretty dramatic even for Japanese stories ! The snow was beautiful ! You had quite the snow hat going for a while to! Thanks for sharing the hike looks like you had a fun fun day!
What a fun winter romp! I can imagine that an uphill trudge through deep snow really gets the cardio going, but for this “senior” viewer the simple serenity of a snow scene is reward enough. Oh, and thank you for that wonderful drone footage at the end. Remarkably beautiful countryside!
Love your walking expeditions, they are of great interest to me. Keep them coming Quinlan, thank you. I hill walk the northwest of England and around Scotland.
Really nice, its always the best when you get to hike and its snowing
HA you got me! 😆 What a fantastic hike, thank you for taking us along ❄️
the story definitely got me for a sec 😂😂 lovely video!
Top layer of snow looked fairly powdery. Hopefully it will be good for building snowmen and forts soon.
Quinlin rings the bell.
A bear turns over in his cave.
"Is it lunchtime?"
Another bear yawns. "No. It's just the boy fucking about."
Love it! This is more my kind of hike! Japan in winter is amazing!
nothing like seeing a new GoNorth video in the feed

Thanks for sharing another beautiful winter hike with us 🙂 are there actually any good water proof clothing "brands" that you recommend for winter hiking?
Ooh you should totally write a book of “Quinlan’s Definitely Not Made Up 😉 Japanese Folktales”! 😂 That snow is so pretty!! I really want it to snow a lot here but all we’re getting is rain in Portland.
Such gorgeous snowy views to put in the eyes and enjoy!! Thanks so much for sharing them. Loving how the snow brings out your playful side too, that's precisely what snow should do to most of us! I enjoyed and was fooled by your original oni folktale which makes me wonder have you ever considered putting together a small book of local folktales/folklore associated with the places you hike which you could sell to people who stay with you or whom you guide or just visitors to the area in general? I'd certainly buy it. Also and please ignore the question if it's too personal or if you've answered it elsewhere, but do you wear thermal/long underpants when hiking the mountains in winter or is it really not necessary?
that is so much snow!
That snow looks so soft, seems like you have a lot of fun in it!
The notes about what the other hikers about reasons for their bear bells was pretty interesting. Clearly people develop a habit and stick to it, and unless they have reason to revisit the rationale, it works well enough. To me, it is just a dinner bell 🙂
Beautiful hike Quinlan! Your passion and talent for story-telling really brings these trails to life.
I attempted Mount Eboshi up here in Aomori Prefecture recently. The deep snow and steep trail was a bit much for me, but I came across a sign talking about the "Legend of the Night Crying Stone". Some legend about hearing a young girl's voice at night. As the story goes, her father was a Ronin who went hunting one day and didn't come back. She now mourns at the rock and her cries can be heard in hours of darkness.

The Tengu is sweating right now watching this video…
"How'd you find out?"
Wow, what a stunning winter scenery my friend. This looks freaking gorgeous! Love it!
All this snow on your head, amazing 😆
What is that ? 4:38 The yon for 4 ? and then 00 . I would have thougfht they would either write yon hyaku for 400 or 400 but not a combination of both 🤣
Is there public transport to the campground in late Feb if we don't drive?
What a lovely hike! I still have yet to go to Northern Japan, let alone Japan in Winter. Hope to take care of that in a year or 2!
Looks like fun! It was -7°C in Portland last week and then we had freezing rain. All I could think of is moving to Okinawa. But Ice is much less fun than snow.
I guess I'm not as much of a winter person as I thought, too.
