Train hitting huge snow drifts on the Bergen Line, Norway. This is from the mountain pass during winter. Snow and weather can shift fast and it is totally unforgiving.

The following links shows the whole trip from Voss to Ål, and will let you see how the amount of snow increases as we gain altitude. It will also the insane winter conditions we’re tackling.

  1. And just think, he's getting paid to do that! How many people would do that job for free? This video = a fun day at work!

  2. Amazing! Having strong ploughs and enough power on your engines you can make it easily. Our engines have much weaker ploughs which can't cope with snow more than 30 cm. I have the bad experience trying to go through drifts about 60 cm and being stuck in the middle of nowhere. Yet, we have just 1 (one) snowblower for more than 6000 (six thousand) km of railtracks. Nice, eh?

  3. Watching this makes me wonder just how much snow can a train push through. Assuming you could see it in advance, at what point would you consider it unsafe, throw on the brakes and pray?

  4. Goodness, I would be concerned about missing a signal or sign during those moments when my vision is suddenly obscured (or Something in the cab distracted me) How do engineers cope with this? Perhaps they learn their routes so well, that the signage is committed to memory?

  5. What would happen if you hit one of those big drifts right as you were passing a signal and couldn't read it?

  6. Lol cool video! I would love to drive trains across the country. There has to be some amazing views! Especially out in places where the only thing touched by humans is the rail line. No billboards, no bullshit, just beautiful scenery.

  7. Thought the Swedes and Finns were mad having met some of their rally drivers. Now I know that the Norwegians are just as mad. Must something the water! FABULOUS.
If that was here in the UK, the trains would still be on shed. Just ask my mate Don! Tee hee. Chaz
