The Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps to fill the gap between the 81mm mortar and the 155mm howitzer. With the new GPS guided precision extended range munition (PERM) developed by Ratheon, the M327 has an extended range of 10 miles with an accuracy of 6 feet, and having 2.5 – 3 times more lethality. The extra range comes from tail fins and canards for in-flight adjustments and to make the round glide as it descends, and the greater lethality is a result of this flight path – normal artillery rounds impact at a 45 degree angle, which blows the top half of the round straight up into the air, but descending at a sharp angle places more energy and fragmentation directly on a target.

It's 21 century. Mortars is such old weapon. Why do ppl still use it?
