Located on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, Buffalo is currently threatened by a blizzard and is experiencing blinding snowfall and rising water levels. Visibility dropped to zero shortly after noon “All my clothes are just a sheet of ice,” FOX Weather correspondent Max Gorden said as the waves crashed on him from Lake Erie in the Buffalo suburb of Hamburg. Hamburg was evacuated due to rising water levels threatening to flood the low-lying area. Waves reaching heights of 14 to 18 feet crash against the coastline. “Incredible – just the power of Mother Nature” Wind also creates problems for Buffalo residents. Winds at Buffalo International Airport were 72 mph Heavy lake-effect snowfall is also expected in the area over the weekend, with up to 4 feet of rain forecast in parts of western New York by Christmas. However, when combined with strong winds, the snow creates white patches. These conditions have created dangerous driving conditions, leading to a travel ban in parts of the region. The National Weather Service in Buffalo filmed the snow conditions to demonstrate the lack of visibility on the roads. Some 200 million Americans are feeling the icy grip of a powerful winter storm that killed at least 12 people ahead of the holiday weekend. More than 1.5 million people lost power on Friday and thousands of flights were cancelled. The huge storm stretches over 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from Texas to Quebec. The bombing cyclone, when atmospheric pressure drops sharply, caused a snow storm on the Great Lakes on the US-Canada border. In Canada, Ontario and Quebec were hit by an Arctic explosion that cut off hundreds of thousands of people from electricity. Much of the rest of the country, from British Columbia to Newfoundland, was threatened by extreme cold and winter storms. Heavy snowfall is forecast for areas in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Buffalo, NY expected at least 35 inches (89 cm). According to the NWS, more than eight million people remained under a blizzard warning. Coastal flooding was observed in New England, New York and New Jersey. A number of hurricane casualties are linked to traffic accidents, including a 50-vehicle collision in Ohio that killed two motorists. The country’s travel problems were exacerbated by a shortage of snowplow operators, driven by low wages. Three people died in weather-related crashes in Oklahoma, three more died on slippery roads in Kentucky and one person whose car overturned in Missouri. One person also died in Texas after prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. Four people were killed and several injured in a massive 50-vehicle collision on an Ohio freeway near Sandusky, Ohio. The Ohio State Highway Patrol warned of near-white conditions and warned travelers to stay at home. Бафало This will be a long lived event, likely 36 hours of moderate to heavy snowfall in a population of over a million, so it’s a big event in every sense Lakes snow warnings have been issued on the east and northeast sides of Lakes Erie and Ontario, including the cities of Buffalo By sunset, 3 to 6 inches of additional snow is expected in the most intense bands near Lake Erie, while 6 to 12 inches of additional snow may accumulate in the most persistent snows near Lake Ontario. A snow flurry is a short but intense period of heavy snowfall, according to the NWS. This snow builds up to two inches in less than 30 minutes. There are also strong winds that can reach over 30 mph, as well as whiteout conditions that reduce visibility by less than a quarter of a mile.
