Japan Travel: Temple Experience with Shojin Ryori, Temple Lodging, Wakayama 30

Visitors looking for a temple experience may be interested in staying at a shukubo (temple lodging). Through this temple lodgings experience, visitors will have a chance to understand simple, traditional lifestyle of Buddhist monks.

Though there are many shukubo throughout Japan, Koyasan is a popular shukubo, with many pilgrims traveling here to pay respects to the temples in this area. Koyasan has over 50 temples in town serving as a shukubo. Being accustomed to foreign guests, the temples of Koyasan are very foreigner-friendly making the whole process relatively simple. The typical cost for a stay is between 9,000 and 15,000 yen per person and night. The price includes dinner and breakfast. Please be aware most temples only accept cash.

In general, temple lodgings consist of a private, traditional Japanese room with tatami mat floors, sliding doors (fusuma), though the toilets and sinks are shared. Bedding is usually futons that are spread on the tatami floor during the night. During the winter, gas heaters are provided to add warmth. There are a few temples which have accommodations resembling that of a mid-range ryokan, with private toilets ad lavish meals.

It is recommended to arrive at the temple no later than 5pm. Dinner is usually served around 6pm. Dinner and breakfast consists vegetarian monks’ cuisine (shojin ryori) with specialties such as konyaku (devils tongue jelly), yuba (tofu skin) and koyadofu (freeze dried tofu). Guests are also invited to participate in morning prayers which typically start around 6am. The prayers are for about 30-45 minutes, after which breakfast is served around 7am. During your stay you may also view the temple’s cultural treasures, halls and garden, as well as enjoy its communal, gender-separated baths.
