Nel 79 d.C. Pompei, insieme ad altre città minori come Ercolano, fu coperta da una coltre di cenere e detriti a causa dell’eruzione vulcanica del Vesuvio. È considerata una delle eruzioni vulcaniche più distruttive della storia, non solo per il numero di vittime, ma anche per la quantità di energia termica sprigionata; la catastrofe naturale è considerata molte volte più letale dei bombardamenti di Hiroshima e Nagasaki della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. La tragedia e le sue conseguenze sono state ampiamente trattate da Plinio il Giovane in una serie di lettere che ha scritto allo storico Tacito. La velocità con cui cenere vulcanica, pomice e altri depositi attraversavano la città ha ucciso centinaia di persone per incenerimento istantaneo o soffocamento. La storia di Pompei è segnata da successo, tragedia e leggenda.

It is considered one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in history, not only for the number of victims, but also for the amount of thermal energy released; the natural catastrophe is considered many times deadlier than the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.
